About Those Outtakes

It’s almost time for the holiday season (notice how I said ALMOST, because I am against all holiday music until at least Halloween has passed), which means if you have small children you’ll be trying to corral them get them to take a decent photo for a holiday card. And while it can take a million tries to get at least one photo where your minions are making eye contact with the camera and not just capturing the blurred images of them running away in protest or tearing down the tree, you have to admit that there is something to be said about those outtakes.

This one was from when Penelope was only 5 months old — not even sitting up yet! It should’ve been easy to take a photo of an infant who isn’t very mobile yet, right? You would think. But we got her dressed in that little crocheted Etsy find, propped her up on a chair with a cozy throw blanket, and right when we started snapping away she slowly began sinking, sinking, sinking, until this happened:

I could have passed right over this photo, deleted it, dubbed it unusable for the card — but it was just too damn cute. (And don’t worry, Greg was right next to her just out of the camera frame to keep her safe.)

But instead, I added some text and used it for the back of our card we sent out that year:

Then there was this one, a series I like to call “The Three Stages of Holiday Fury”:

So go ahead and send out an imperfect photo this year. Because, even though it’s fun to try to get a decent picture, sometimes life is all about the outtakes.
